About Piscine

An editorial kitchen for home cooks.

Piscine is a small, independent editorial project devoted to home cooking. Our work consists of three things: tested recipes, written carefully; short guides to the equipment and ingredients that home cooks use; and a free weekly letter sent on Fridays. We do not sell products, run sponsored content, or accept gifts from manufacturers.

The site is published from Gaastra, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is read most often by home cooks across the United States — in apartments and houses, with the equipment most people actually own. We try to remember that as we write.

What we publish

Three kinds of writing, each held to the same standards.

  • Recipes. Each recipe is cooked at least three times in our home test kitchen before it appears on the site. We note the equipment we used, the brands of staple ingredients, and any substitutions we tested. When a recipe doesn’t work reliably, we don’t publish it.
  • Techniques. Short, illustrated explanations of the small movements that show up across the recipes — knife work, building a pan sauce, what a braise actually needs.
  • Equipment and ingredient notes. Informational guides written by cooks, not commerce writers. We describe what something is, how to choose one, and how to take care of it. We do not link to retailers.

How we are funded

Piscine is reader-supported and self-funded. The site is free to read in full. We do not run banner advertising on recipe pages, we do not accept payment for editorial coverage, and we do not participate in affiliate programs. If that changes in the future, we will say so plainly on this page and label any sponsored content clearly.

The people behind it

Piscine is written and edited by a small group of cooks and writers. Our editorial work is overseen by a managing editor; recipe development is led by our test-kitchen editor. We are not licensed nutritionists or medical professionals, and nothing we publish is intended as medical, dietary, or nutritional advice. For those questions, please speak with a qualified professional.

Our editorial standards

We hold ourselves to the standards described in our editorial policy. In short: we test what we publish, we credit our sources, we correct mistakes publicly, and we keep advertising separate from editorial.
